Sober Worm Masquerading as Antivirus Software
Frisk Software International and Kaspersky Labs last week posted descriptions and fix instructions for the W32Sober.A
virus that masquerades as antivirus software. To add insult to injury, it adds words of praise for the author of
the SoBig worm. CNet is also reporting on a the heightened probability of a Son of MSBlast virus.

Newsweek: Cyber and Real Terrorists To Join Forces
Echoing a warning of many of the experts we've interviewed, Newsweek Magazine this week speculated on the possibility
that future cyber-attacks (aiding by uncareful users with broadband connections) may be coordinated with terrorists'
physical attacks to disrupt both the Internet and computer networks that control the basic functions of modern
society.

Viruses Hurt Microsoft's Bottom Line...
On Thursday, Microsoft admitted that a $700 million decline in future "unearned" revenue was due to skittishness
on the part of some of its big customers to sign long-term contracts with the software giant. "This is the
first time in Microsoft's earnings that they have really mentioned that a security problem has hurt the bottom
line," said Matt Rosoff, an industry analyst.

Tip of the Week: The KRESV Test for E-Mail Attachments
The CERT Coordination Center advises that users be instructed to apply the so-called "KRESV" test to
insure e-mail safety. KRESV stands for
Know (do you know the sender?),
Receive (do you know the receiver?)
Expect (are you expecting the e-mail?),
Sense (does the subject header make sense?),
and Virus (does it contain a virus?)
According to CERT, "You should apply these five tests to every piece of email with an attachment that you
receive. If any test fails, toss that email. If they all pass, then you still need to exercise care and watch for
unexpected results as you read it."

25 safest cars on the road - Sedans to SUVs
Consumer Reports publishes its results in five categories:
Upscale and large sedans. The Lexus LS300, the Audi A4 and the BMW 330i topped the charts. The Buick LeSabre Limited
and Chrysler 300M came in at the bottom of 14 vehicles tested in this category.
Family sedans. The Volkswagen Passat GLX (V6) came in at number one, with the Toyota Camry XLE (V6) close behind.
The four-cylinder Passat GLS, the Nissan Altima 3.5 SE and the Subaru Legacy also did well in this category. Safety
dogs were the Pontiac Grand Prix GT, the Oldsmobile Alero and the Pontiac Grand Am.
Small cars. Volkswagen also took top honors in the battle of the bantamweights. The VW Golf TDI came in at No.1.
Close behind was the Honda Civic EX and the Volkswagen Jetta GLS TDI. Trailing in this category were the Hyundai
Elantra GLS and the Chevrolet Cavalier LS.
Pickup trucks. In the full-sized pickup category, pole position went to the Toyota Tundra SR5 4.7, the Dodge Ram
SLT 4.7 and the Ford F.150 XLT 5.4. Taking the top honors in the compact crew-cab pickups were the Toyota Tacoma
TRD (V6) and the Nissan Frontier (V6). Rated as poor were the Dodge Dakota SLT, the Chevrolet S-10 L5 (V6) and
the GMC Sonoma 5LS (V6). "Pickups generally don't do well in these assessments," says Champion. "They
usually don't protect the driver in crashes and some of them have poor brakes and sloppy handling."
Sport utility vehicles and minivans. In the small-sized SUV category, the top vehicles for safety were the Saturn
VUE (V6), the Honda CR-V EX and the Hyundai Santa Fe GLS (V6). In the midsized category, the winners were the Lexus
RX300, the Acura MDX and the Toyota Highlander. SUVs that did poorly were the Chevrolet Trail Blazer, the GMC Envoy
and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. As for minivans, the Honda Odyssey EX, the Toyota Sienna LE and the Mazda MPV LX all
did well. But the Chevrolet Venture LS, the Oldsmobile Silhouette GLS and Pontiac Montana fared poorly.
Zuby says that the Pontiac Montana, a minivan, probably was the worst vehicle the institute has tested that's still
being sold. "The crush zone didn't crush as much as it should have done, meaning there's a high likelihood
of a serious injury in an accident."

Many Internet Services (ISP's) buy equipment and run it until it dies of old age. The problem with that is....
the ISP's customers have to put up with aging equipment. Here at 1USA we proactively replace good equipment with new equipment after only a 2-year lifespan. So far in the last
year, we've replaced 7 of our 21 heavy-duty Unix systems (web servers & email servers), and we're in the process
of upgrading the Dial-in Network from V.90 to V.92, the Radius computers, and other things.
While this is the expensive way of running a business, customers who switch over to 1USA from other ISPs (like
Netzero, Juno, AOL, MSN, Earthlink) really do see the quality
difference.
Selling point.... you don't need to switch to another ISP to get
better service!
In fact, those customers are moving to 1USA!
As part of all this re-investing, We have LOTS of new phone numbers... too many
phone numbers to simply put onto a web page.
No, you cannot simply begin using one of them.... they are organized "onto a network".... meaning that
we have to setup your account to use that network. The web pages will be updated over time, but it will take awhile
to build it into a useful tool to help new customers signup & choose a local number.

Retrieve all your emails from multiple email accounts and see them all at
one place! -- your @1usa.com email account!
This means that it can retrieve emails from any other POP3 mail server in the world - which makes it easier for
people when they switch to 1USA from another ISP.
POP3 is a 'real' mail server.
We specifically do not support email retrieving for the following providers --because they're only Webmail services,
not a real POP3. (Webmail is sending-receiving your email through a web page, similar to Hotmail or Yahoo mail)

10/11/2003: 1USA is working on improving speeds through the phone lines to realize speeds faster than 56k. Using
a particular modem our guy Bill Calamia has achieved a speed of 192k. This is a first! We now need to do further
testing so that it can be duplicated at will.
This will provide Broadband Speeds to everyone... not just people who are within DSL or Comcast service areas.

CBS News Hacked on Behalf of Candidate
Political advocacy and antisocial hacking combined when CBS News' home page
was replaced for a pitch for Ohio Representative Dennis Kucinich, who is running dead last in the race for the
Democratic nomination among mainstream voters but can count on at least one fervid supporter in the hacker community.
"Our campaign would never do such a thing or condone such a thing. We are not interested in taking over someone
else's Web site, I can assure you," Kucinich spokesman Dennis Swanson told CBS News afterwards. Authorities

Privacy advocates are up in arms over an $89.00 keystroke-logging software program called Lover Spy that allows
the terminally suspicious

keystrokes and records them
onto the Lover Spy server for later anonymous retrieval. But the company -- and anyone using its products -- could
face up to 10 years in jail

9/17/03: Warning: Domain Registry of America DROA renewal scam
We have discovered that a company called, "Domain Registry of America", has been emailing Domain Name
Owners with deceptive messages about domain transfers. The goal of the e-mails is to trick people into transferring
their domain names away from the current Domain Name Registrar. The emails falsely claim to be a response to a
transfer request made by our customers.
If it does not come from your regular Domain Name Registrar, DO NOT PAY IT.
If you feel, as we do, that the Domain Registry of America has acted deceptively, you can make your feelings known
by writing to the Federal
Trade Commission and/or Buffalo Police fraud unit at 716-851-4440. |

7/2/2003: A new customer signed up with 1USA. She had a hard time connecting and retrieving emails.
We referred her to a computer shop local in her area.
The computer doctor found 16 different viruses that had infected 983 files.
I think that's a Record. |
6/26/2003: The US Do Not Call list is active at www.donotcall.gov. The website is www.donotcall.gov but the
server has crashed a few times in recent days.
They say it may take up to 18 months
to have participating companies remove your phone number.
Notice that only American companies can sometimes be fined for calling, not companies outside the USA. No jurisdiction.
So... what happens when the government gives the list of No Calls to companies who will be calling from outside
the USA? Think about that.
If you believe that the government can pull this off without a flaw, or without divulging your identity to other
new callers, then go ahead and sign up.
It would probably be better if you
bought one of those CallerID boxes that emits tones to those companies who do call your number. Manage the calls yourself. No sense waving a flag to invite others, eh?
