	INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS Choose a file to download. Once the file has downloaded, simply double-click its icon to begin the installation. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the program. 	#windowsupdate Critical Windows Updates The first thing to do is to visit Microsoft and get all the current versions. Then come back here and download the files below, whichever ones you wish. On Windowsupdate.Microsoft.Com, Click on Product Updates button. It will take awhile to download the Detector software to see which versions are already installed. It will then display a list of files in the Critical Updates section, Pick of the Month, Recommended junk, and Additional stuff at the bottom of the page. Only do the Critical Updates section. You may need to return 5 or 6 times to get ALL the updates, as the Detector will not recommend installing a ServicePak2 until after ServicePak1 is installed.

Browser Hijacking is another Real Problem This has become one of the biggest problems computers users face today. If a user notes their homepage constantly changing, search engines won't work or they are inundated with pop up messages, it is likely the computer has been hijacked. Folks are getting their browsers hijacked at an alarming rate by a variety of different methods. Its a daunting task for any one application to keep up with the constant new threats. After running Spybot S&D, there are other things which can be done to clean up. If a scan and cleaning with SpybotS&D does not fix any of the above problems I would suggest getting the latest copy of HijackThis and read the quick start tutorial. 	#stopstartups Stop Startups The next thing to do is to disable programs that chew up memory by running automatically every time your computer starts up. If you don't use these programs all the time, then why have them load all the time, chewing up memory? Gain more control over the applications placed in the Startup folder, and even discover items you never knew were there. Numerous programs you install may be loaded into your Startup folder, which has the advantage that the programs will often load faster. But as a result, your PC can take longer to physically start up. Most of these items will be displayed in the System Tray when Windows loads, but there are often others that are hidden. These can be viewed using the Microsoft System Configuration Utility (MS Config), but other than disabling them nothing can be done. This software provides you with more functionality, clearly detailing everything within the Startup folder. Entries can be deleted completely or assigned various settings - always run, never run or ask. This last option prompts you at Windows startup whether or not you wish to run the applications. This gives control back to you vs the software! Alternatively, you can pause the startup process, and at the press of the Esc key will let you manually select which items to run.

	#freemem Free up Memory The next thing to do is to manage the programs that do load into memory. Microsoft's Windows has a memory problem: it likes to eat it all, leaving you with nothing left to actually do any work within an application. The details would take too long to go into here, but the short explanation is that applications are allocated Ram and these allocations can remain even when the application is not being used. (You quit out of a program, but it's still hogging up memory when you go to do something else - like log into the internet.) This little program lets you free up memory as and when you wish, allowing for the release of up to 1,024Mb of Ram. Freeing up too much can be as big a problem, however, so a good rule of thumb is to only free up half of the Ram you have. Simply select the amount of Ram you want to free and FreeMem does the rest. A handy graph shows you exactly how much Ram is available for your applications. A professional version is available that adds various extra features, including: Automatic freeing of Ram Idle detection Free & Run menu: free Ram just before starting particular applications.

	#fontmanager Font Manager Go into c:\Windows\Fonts then click on the View menu, then select Details. This shows the number of fonts installed and the size of each. Astronomical! Many computers have memory problems by having too many programs and fonts installed. One of the things you can do to lean-out your system is to remove any unused fonts - but be careful to not remove any fonts with a red icon or any of the default "MS" Windows fonts or your screens will be messed-up. FontSmart is a program that makes it EASY to install/uninstall TrueType fonts. Most fonts indicated with a TT (TrueType) can be removed safely, but reboot the computer afterwards to reduce the possibility of a Surprise! Windows uses different fonts in Win95, Win98, WinME, and it is best to have a list of the default installed Windows fonts. Never remove those particular default Windows' fonts. FontSmart will DISABLE fonts without having to delete them. FontSmart is the best tool of its kind I've seen anywhere.
