How to set up a PPP Connection in Windows

What is PPP?

PPP is a direct connection between your computer and the internet using the 1USA Network.
What this means, is that instead of using 1USA's Online Service interface (WorldGroup) (similar to AOL), you would use direct dial-up software (Windows 98's Dial-Up Networking) to call in, and once the connection is established, you simply need to run Netscape, MSIE, mIRC, or whatever software you choose to run.

Setting up Windows 95/98/ME for PPP is fairly simple and painless. All you need to do is follow the instructions below...

If you have any problems, please send email to The Webmaster .
Our technical support staff will reply to you as quickly as possible.

Starting out

Configuring PPP for 1USA

1. Open up the "My Computer" Icon

2. Open up the "Dial-Up Networking" folder

3. Double-Click the "Make New Connection"

4. Enter the name of the Connection -- type in 1USA or 1USA.COM. The name of the connection isn't realy important, as long as there are no other connections with this name.

5. Let the Modem settings alone, it was pre-configured by Windows' Plug & Play.

6. Click on the "NEXT" Button

7. Enter the Phone Number to dial.
Choose one of our phone numbers for your locality.
Numbers are listed on http://www.1usa.com/dialups/

8. Click on the "Next" Button

9. Click on the "Finish" Button.

This Creates a "1USA" icon configured to Dial-Up to our server.

You're not finished yet. You need to configure the connection icon that you just made...

10. Right-click on the icon you just made in the Dial-up Networking folder and select "Properties" from the little gray menu.

Optional - to prevent the computer from adding a "1" in front of the area code:
Some localities have 7-digit dialing while other localities have 10-digit dialing. To prevent the computer from dialing a "1" in front of a number, if the area code is in the Area Code field, remove it and put it into the Number field (so that all digits are in the number field),
then UN-click "include area code in dialing properties" to gray-out the area code box.

11. Now click on Server Types tab.

On the Server Types window,
- UN-click "Log Onto Network"
- UN-click "NetBEUI"
- UN-click "IPX/SPX"

There should be TWO that are checked:
- Enable Software Compression
- and TCP/IP.

(This will speed-up your Logon process, and it will speed-up the throughput that you see when surfing the Web.)

---------------------
On the TCP/IP Settings Windows
Both sections should already be set to
"Server Assigned"
---------------------
Some software requires this information:
Primary DNS: "Server Assigned"
Secondary DNS: "Server Assigned"

Click OK to close the window.

Now to connect to 1USA.COM...

1. Double Click on the "1USA" Icon to open the "Connect to 1USA" window.

2. Enter your Logon USER-ID
3. Enter your PASSWORD
4. Check the "Save Password" Box.
5. Click on the Connect Button.

There should be a little Computer icon in the System Tray showing that you are connected.
(The System Tray is in the bottom right corner of your screen with the digital clock)

To run any software, either click on its shortcut on the Desktop, or click on Start > Programs > your program.
Connect to 1USA's phone number first, then you can run Internet Explorer, Netscape, mIRC, or whatever software you wish to run.
